The sustainable transformation of our Group
Since my first day in Generali Group, the work of the Sustainability Team has aimed to transform our company by integrating sustainability into every activity of the company.
In the almost 8 years I have worked within the Group, a relatively short time compared to Generali's long history of business, we have succeeded in taking sustainability to the next level, amplifying the company's ability to make a positive impact on people and the planet.
This momentum has been recognised both externally, particularly by ESG analysts, and within the Group. The efforts and collaboration of everyone led to our company being included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, one of the world's most important sustainability indices, for the fifth consecutive year in December 2022.
This is the result of an effort to transform the company from a sustainable perspective, starting from integrating sustainability into the corporate purpose - "enable people to shape a safer and more sustainable future by caring for their lives and dreams" - and assigning sustainability the role of 'originator' of the Group's strategy 'Lifetime Partner 24: Driving Growth'. This is the first time in Generali's history that sustainability has acquired such a central and founding role.
Being at the heart of the strategy means being a founding element of our transformation and evolution, shaping the way decisions are made. The ambition is to lead Generali to be a transformative, generative and impact-driven company, capable of creating shared value for all. To facilitate our evolution and the integration of sustainability into everything we do, we developed a clear and transparent Sustainability Framework. Our framework clarifies the Responsible Roles that we, as a Group, play – investor, insurer, employer and corporate citizen, so that each and every member of our company can better understand how they can work to embed Sustainability in their daily work.
Within the framework, the priority the Group has decided to address is climate change. Indeed, since 2018 the Generali Group Climate Change Strategy, approved by the Board of Directors, has been a point of reference for the entire Group. This provides an overview of the decisions taken to facilitate a just and socially equitable transition to a net-zero economy. The main objective is to manage the risks and opportunities associated with climate change and the green transition by implementing a dedicated strategy.
External and internal recognition that we are a sustainable company, the integration of sustainability into the purpose and business plan, the provision of a framework and a clear strategy to address one of the greatest challenges of our time: these are the results of a long-lasting story of evolution and transformation that I am proud to have guided for the past eight years.
Our Group has changed profoundly in recent years, but this is only the beginning of a long journey. I hope and believe that each person working in this Company will take part in the positive change by integrating sustainability every day wherever possible, for the good of all.
