2004 - Death in Paradise

Helmut Achten from Generali Deutschland AG
One of the great catastrophes of the young millennium was the great tsunami following a seaquake in the Indian Ocean. In the holiday paradise of Pukhet in Thailand alone, the tidal wave swept some 2,500 people into the sea, leaving no trace of them. Not counting the thousands more dead who were found and mostly identified.

Among the victims were many German holidaymakers who had spent the Christmas holidays there. In accordance with our market share, we were certain that people insured with us in life and accident insurance had also become victims of the disaster.

Even before the first case was reported, we therefore addressed the question of how to help the left behind in this difficult situation without waiting for the long-standing procedure of an official declaration of death of a missing person.

After all, it is far worse than losing a loved one if that person has simply disappeared and no one can confirm their death either. In addition to the personal loss, there is often also the threat of financial ruin. The insurance taken out to protect against the financial consequences therefore had to help quickly here, so that it could help at all. Therefore, we could not and were not allowed to wait years until a court officially declared the victim dead.

Within a very short time, we were able to develop a procedure together with all the departments involved and draw up corresponding work instructions and draft documents and forms that allowed us to pay out even comparatively large sums quickly in such cases and to help where help could not wait until all the necessary documents were available.

Human touch makes proud.

Menschlichkeit macht stolz.
