We, Generali: Lionhearted

Monica Alessandra Possa from Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A.
My story at Generali started in 2013.

When I first joined the Group, I was blown away by its rich heritage   and it motivated me even further to play a role in the transformation journey that Group was going through at the time.

I could not have imagined how much this journey would change not only my perspective, but also me as a person.

In my first months, I discovered a multinational company with a huge variety of different cultures and specificities. But everywhere I went, I could always detect two common traits: an incredible sense of engagement and belonging, and valuable people, with strong technical skills and very high ethical values – and this was something I had not come across in my previous experiences.

I was struck by the immediate sense of responsibility that I felt towards the Generali people who had shown such long-term commitment and passion. And I was deeply moved by the results of the first global engagement survey, that confirmed globally my preliminary feelings.

It was a great privilege to be involved in building a transformation strategy, centered on enabling and empowering our people with the skills and capabilities needed to thrive in the digital context.

For me, this was the beginning of an amazing journey, spanning across three different strategic cycles that finally led us to our guiding star for the years to come: our Lifetime Partner Ambition and new Purpose, “To enable People to shape a safer future by caring for their lives and dreams”.

Together, we have all worked hard during these years.

We have spent hours and hours discussing, diverging and converging; we built our values, behaviours, leadership models and much more.

Eight intense years, during which the sense of belonging of individuals evolved, transforming us all into a powerful community of empowered people that can make the difference with Ownership, Simplification, Innovation and Human Touch – for the benefit of customers, local communities and for our Company as well. This caring and proactive attitude goes hand-in-hand with the amazing job we are doing with The Human Safety Net – our Foundation supporting vulnerable families, small children and refugees in 23 Countries.

Today we are a strong community that can not be stopped or divided, not even by a pandemic, because when times are challenging, our Group’s heart and soul shine even brighter.

For me personally, these eight years have been both the most challenging and most rewarding of my career.

I have been working with great people united by a common purpose everywhere, and I can see the impact of the work done together, and the value for our business and our people.

I also recognize and appreciate my own personal evolution, from a more traditional management style, built in many years of experience, to the awareness of the need to change and   embrace a more aware, inclusive and empathetic approach.

Still a learning journey in progress, on the professional as well as on the personal side……

The capability to transform and react, the learning agility,  the resilience that I have encountered everywhere in this Group is what convinces me that we are moving together in the right direction and ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

Today, we do not only cherish our 190 years of history, but also our ability to keep evolving and building strong foundations, to shape a successful future – the future that this Group and its amazing people deserve.

The dearest symbol for me of all of that is our proud Lion overseeing the sea on top of Palazzo Berlam, the Group Academy in Trieste. I always think of it is a representation of who we are: a lionhearted Group capable of looking towards the future with a special talent for innovation and the solidity and trustworthiness that comes from a 190-year-long history.
