The transport of goods: from the docks in the Middle Ages to globalization
The establishment of insurance companies goes back to a period of great development for the maritime trades: since then, the role of the insurance system has expanded and nowadays it includes almost every kind of trading, supporting and boosting people’s opportunities. The goods we find on the shelves of department stores, at the corner shop or on the web are often produced – partially or entirely – around the world. These areas have become closer thanks to the structured transportation systems by sea, land and sky that - due to their number, carrying capacity and travel extension - are certainly exposed to many risk factors and thus require, nowadays as in the late Middle Ages, an appropriate insurance cover.
